SUMMARY
Large shrub or small trees, usually single-stemmed at the base, sparingly and stoutly branched, 2 - 5 m tall, bark chocolate brown. Flowering stems terete, matt reddish brown, 0.7 - 1.0 cm diam., lenticels absent, glabrous. Leaf-blades narrowly to broadly elliptic, 29 - 43 x 12 - 27 cm, apex rounded or shortly acuminate, base obtuse to acute, margin very shallowly sinuate, nerves 9 - 11 on each side of the midrib, leathery, drying greyish blue, glabrous apart from the puberulent midrib on the lower surface; petioles triangular in section, 7.5 - 10.5 x 0.2 - 0.4 cm, glabrous; stipules ovate-triangular to obovate, 1.5 x 0.9 cm, apex rounded or acuminate, not bifurcate, glabrous, caducous, leaving a stipular scar 0.15 cm thick. Inflorescences congested, dense, overall 4 x 4.5 cm, with c. 250 flowers, peduncles stout, 2.0 x 0.6 cm, glabrous; inflorescence branches discernible, but reduced; bracts highly reduced; pedicel 1 mm long, glabrous. Flowers hermaphrodite, 5 - 6-merous, presumed heterostylous (only short-styled morph seen). Calyces cylindrical, 3 - 4 x 3 mm, the free part 0.5 - 1 mm long, lacking lobes or teeth or with c. 8 shallow, inconspicuous teeth, glabrous; corollas orange in bud, greenish white with lobes tinged orange at anthesis; tube 5 - 7 mm long, c. 2 mm diam. at base, dilating to 3 - 4 mm in the upper part, glabrous apart from a ring of short hairs at the level of insertion of the free filaments on the inner surface, lobes valvate, patent, thick, triangular, 2 - 3 x 1.5 -2 mm, apex acuminate, lacking a dorsal ridge; stamens with free filaments c. 1 mm long, inserted 2 - 3 mm below the mouth of the tube, anthers just included or partly exserted, 2 mm long; style included, 2 - 3 mm long, with two minute stigmatic lobes; disk inconspicuous, enfolding base of style, rounded, 0.5 - 1 x 2 mm. Infructescences with 12 - 20 fruits clustered on a stout, erect peduncle 2 - 2.2 x 0.4 cm, 3 - 5 branched, branches 5 - 8 mm long; pedicel 2 - 4 x 1.5 mm; bracts caducous, not seen. Fruits ripening orange or orange-red, ovoid, 1.4 - 1.5 x 0.7 - 0.8 mm, smooth, rarely with a few shallow longitudinal ridges, crowned by persistent calyx cup 1 mm high; pyrenes 2, lacking pre-formed germination slits, pulp adhering. Seeds 2, smooth, surface without ridges, endosperm with 2 - 4 deep ventral invaginations and c. 10 shallow dorsal ones.
